How it Works
Our Home Delivery Service
After signing up for your chosen fresh box size, you will receive a reusable tote of fresh produce on the same day of each week. That will be a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening, depending on what area of Winnipeg you live in. The fresh box contents are carefully chosen by our expert produce buyer for seasonality, quality, price, and to deliver you a week’s worth of ingredients for health snacks and meals. We will get you the best value and quality for your week’s produce budget, and quality is guaranteed. You will tell us your dislikes/preferences when you sign up. We will make substitutions accordingly so you do not get anything that you do not like. You don’t need to do anything after signing up, just be home in a four hour pre-determined window (5:30-9:30pm) to receive your order delivered right to your door.
You may choose to modify your fresh bin (standing or sporadic week-to-week), even have standing orders for add-ons that keep you running to the store such as local organic milk and eggs, bakery items, and fair trade organic coffee! Adding on non-produce groceries is done conveniently from our website’s shopping cart, or can be set up as a standing order.
Payments are made by cash or cheque when you receive your order, or with advance arrangement with our office by Visa or MasterCard.
SIGN UP (and cancellation of service)
Start by filling in the Sign Up form on our website You will choose what size of bin suits your needs. You can specify if there are items you never want, as well as telling us your fruit & veggie preferences. Let us know the address you want it delivered to (usually your home address). You will receive a welcoming reply by email to your sign up form with confirmation of which evening you will receive your weekly delivery, and when it will begin. We try our best to reply by the next business day.
By signing up you are not committed to continue service past your first delivery, but there is a non-refundable $5 sign-up charge. To cancel send an email asking for cancellation of service. One week’s notice to quit is appreciated so we can deliver the last order in a cardboard box and not have to return for the empty rubber tote bin. Please make sure to have all of our empty fresh bins ready to return to the driver at EVERY delivery, and especially your final.
PREVIEW FRESH BIN CONTENTS
You can check what will be in your next week’s fresh bin each week by clicking on This Week’s Fresh Bin. Upcoming bin contents are posted each Friday for the following week. Bin contents posted to the website are a best estimate and are subject to some changes due to the volatile nature of weather, farming, perishable produce and transport.
ADD ON GROCERIES
Add grocery items and extra produce from our on-line shopping cart. Submitting your order tells us to pack them in with your fresh box and deliver with your fresh bin at no extra delivery charge. The shopping cart add-ons will be automatically added to your fresh box invoice. Many customers find standing orders for items they use each week to be very convenient and reduce trips to the supermarket. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE A REPLY TO YOUR ORDER within 24 hours please call us – when you submit an order we still need to verify fill (or substitutions) and arrange payment before it can be delivered or picked up.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR FRESH BIN At Sign Up
From the sign up form you can identify specific produce items that you never want in your fresh bin (permanent dislikes and/or allergies), as well as your preferences (fruits and veggies you love or eat a lot of) to help us choose substitutions if necessary. On weeks when your specified avoidances are among the bin contents, you will instead automatically receive produce of an equivalent value. You don’t need to remind us of your permanent preferences and dislikes.
SUBSTITUTIONS by the week
Food is fun and we aim to delight you with seasonal treats. Our customers tell us they love that they are occasionally introduced to foods that are new to them. If you preview something in the upcoming This Week’s Fresh Bin that you don’t want, you may request one substitute. You will receive an equivalent value of another fruit or vegetable, either something from your preference list or a requested sub (if available and similar value). Each week one substitute can be made for free, above and beyond your Permanent Dislikes. Additional subs will be charged $1.00 per item.
SKIP A WEEK
You can skip one or several weeks, for whatever reason, at any time. Just let us know by email (preferred) or by phone, by noon the day prior to your scheduled delivery. Fresh Option donates surplus food each week to a local food bank, shelter or community kitchen, and some of our customers request their skipped delivery be donated to one of these organizations to help the less fortunate eat well in Winnipeg.
The delivery routes span a 4 hour time period on a set evening, between 5:30 – 9:30pm. You will receive deliveries weekly unless you notify us to ‘skip’. To find out when there is a route in your area click on Delivery Schedule/Fees & Pick-ups. Your produce arrives in a rubber tote, which you keep for a week, rinse out and air dry, then we pick up the empty bin the next scheduled delivery.
SPECIAL DELIVERY INSTRUCTIONS
What do I do if I won’t be home to receive my regularly scheduled delivery? Don’t worry. Alternate arrangements can be made. The most common plan that many of our customers have put in place is a standing “ok to leave if not home” note for our driver. If this special request is in place our driver rings your bell and if you do not answer, they will leave the bin on your doorstep (or a spot you specify such as in porch, or at side door). We need notice by 4:00pm if you are authorizing us for a one time or a new “ok to leave” directive.
With advanced notice, you can arrange to pick up at our warehouse at 1338 Clifton Street (west of Erin Street). Fresh boxes can be arranged for pick up Tuesdays 2-4pm, and Wednesday through Friday 8:30-4pm. (SUMMERTIME HOURS: WE CLOSE AT 2PM ALL FRIDAYS IN JUNE – SEPTEMBER). Orders that are not picked up by Friday at 10am will be donated to one of several community kitchens, food banks or outreach programs, at the expense of the customer, unless you tell us to hold it.
If you are not home or do not answer your door, and do not have an ‘ok to leave if not home’ special instruction, and our best efforts to get your order to you fail, we return your bin to our warehouse. Due to the waste of resources and food caused by these circumstances, our policy is that you are responsible for paying the amount of the invoice. We all slip up occasionally and if you do forget, you still have the opportunity to 1) pick up your box at our location, or 2) contact us immediately to request a re-delivery IF possible ($5 fee applies), or 3) your order will be donated to whichever charitable community organization we are donating to that Friday and you must pay the invoice.
With each fresh bin order you receive a newsletter printed on the back of your receipt. This is an opportunity to share information about where and how your food was grown, factors affecting local farmers and eaters, produce storage and cooking tips, grocery specials, and recipes to inspire as you integrate this fresh produce into your ‘menu’. The recipes are vegetarian and highlight ingredients that can be found in your Fresh Bin and from our grocery add-on offerings.
Our Promise: We strive to make your experience in opening each fresh bin a joy you look forward to each week, please let us know if we’ve missed our mark so we can achieve that goal. Fresh Option staff sorts and hand packs each fresh bin with utmost care. Some variation in size, shape, color, and even the occasional bug is considered an acceptable part of organic produce, If, however, you receive an item that is substandard in freshness or quality, we are happy to replace the item in your next box, or with other produce of the same value. Just email us immediately with details (within 24 hours of receiving) so we can address the problem.
